“I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvelous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.” Psalms 139:14 (KJV)
You’re not pretty! You’re too fat! I don’t love you anymore! You’re ugly! You stink! I want a divorce! I hate you! You’re a failure and a disappointment! The belligerent list goes on and on. When people you love, especially a spouse or partner, constantly put you down and criticize you and your character, you start to believe it. Words DO HURT!!!
It’s so easy to get angry, frustrated and bitter when we hear malicious words and phrases, deliberately aimed at the heart to cause emotional harm. When bullying comes from a so-called loving spouse, close friend or partner, it rips away your heart and soul. Sometimes it can leave you powerless and begin to create a level of low self-esteem. Even during these times of hurt and grief, our minds can become so numb to reality that we lose focus on life and the things that really matter.
Here comes the emotional masks! We have all been guilty of wearing different kinds of mask to adapt to situations! As Christians, we are the main ones who are guilty of covering up our feelings and pretending that everything is OK. Living in a pretentious world can be dangerous. Proverbs 13:7 (NIV) says “A pretentious life is an empty life; a plain and simple life is a full life.”
God does answers prayers. There is no hurt or pain that goes unnoticed. As Christians, we are not immune to struggles of life, hurt, pain and disappointments. We go around the town, church and work pretending like life is a bucket of red apples, while on the inside we have worms eating away at our very souls.
“We all wear masks, and the time comes when we cannot remove them without removing some of our own skin.” André Berthiaume
Instead of facing our challenges head on, we put on a facade and become champions (or victims) of fake smiles, fake identities, and fake truths about ourselves! We lie to ourselves and ignore the bigger issue. When we are depressed, we would rather numb our emotions (anger, fear, anxiety, shame) and hide behind the mask of smiles and lies, trying to fit in socially, instead of dealing with the hurt.
When we hide behind the mask, we lose focus of God’s plan for our life. We can’t see what His plan is because we are hiding. It limits our passions for creativity and purpose. Listen….one of the most beautiful things about God is that He understands everything that we go through. He feels every hurt, every pain, and he hears every tear drop that falls. He knows us better than we know ourselves. That’s just who God is!
“I’ll show up and take care of you as I promised and bring you back home. I know what I’m doing. I have it all planned out—plans to take care of you, not abandon you, plans to give you the future you hope for.” Jeremiah 29:11 (MSG)
Unleash the Beauty Behind the Mask
Unleash those self-destructive beliefs about yourself. Begin by being satisfied with yourself, your virtues, abilities and limitations. Be willing to own and take responsibilities of your thoughts, actions, and emotions without being in denial or hiding. Realize that we make our own choices (to marry or make friends with a relationship bully) and we have a responsibility to understand the reasons and motivations for our own behaviors and responses.
Unleash and challenge those beliefs about yourself that are counterproductive to reaching your potential. The belief that you have to be perfect causes you to try to perform at risky high levels that are unrealistic and unattainable. The belief that you have to be strong tells you that weakness and any other vulnerable emotions are just wrong. The belief that you have to please everybody. Your worthiness does not depend on what others think of you.
Unleash Self-Esteem! Building self-esteem is an experience. Self-esteem is a measure of how valuable you are. People with high self-esteem are confident, well rounded, they know what they want, and they know who they are. Self-esteem allows us to move toward life rather than hiding from life. People who lack of self-esteem are more confused, less clear, and don’t know themselves well enough to understand and cope with the situation.
Unleash your full potential! You have so much power within you. Connect to your inner self. Believe in yourself. You are worth more than a dime of drama! Discover who you really are in Christ. It’s revealing time. Take off the covers and the masks! Don’t be afraid to dive into your destiny. Don’t be fake. It’s gets demanding to keep putting up fronts. It’s time to heal and move forward!
God says you are fearfully and wonderfully made. You are destined for greatness. Live life with a purpose. Understand God’s plan for you. Don’t believe the negative hype. Don’t be afraid to show your real self. Write down your aspirations and goals in a spiritual journal. Start with small goals. Don’t let anyone silence your passions. You are destined to be business owners, entrepreneurs, authors, bloggers and millionaires! Don’t let your vision die.
“Accept everything about yourself–I mean everything. You are you and that is the beginning and the end–no apologies, no regrets.” -Clark Moustakas
“The heart is hopelessly dark and deceitful, a puzzle that no one can figure out. But I, God, search the heart and examine the mind. I get to the heart of the human. I get to the root of things. I treat them as they really are, not as they pretend to be.” Jeremiah 17:9-11 (MSG)
Inspired to breathe!
“Oh yes, you shaped me first inside, then out; you formed me in my mother’s womb. I thank you, High God—you’re breathtaking! Body and soul, I am marvelously made! I worship in adoration—what a creation! You know me inside and out, you know every bone in my body; You know exactly how I was made, bit by bit, how I was sculpted from nothing into something. Like an open book, you watched me grow from conception to birth; all the stages of my life were spread out before you. The days of my life all prepared before I’d even lived one day.” Psalms 139:14-16 (MSG)
