Guard your heart

Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life” Proverbs 4:23 (NLT)

Your heart is the most important, life-giving organ in your body. It is the very essence of life, a priceless treasure.  The same heart that beats, circulates blood and supplies oxygen and nutrients to the body, is where God wants to reside.

When the heart is physically compromised with obesity, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, depression, stress and other disease factors, it causes reduction in blood flow to the arteries. Our hearts are also at risk of being unhealthy when its compromised with anger, hatred, greed, bitterness, and guilt. This too can block the flow of God’s spirit in us.  God wants our heart to be free to worship and serve him and not contaminated with IMPS! (impurities, impatience, impulses, imposters).

“Ye offspring of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh” Matthew 12:34

Our hearts are so fragile. It is easy to make unhealthy choices when it comes to guarding the heart and relationships.  We all want to to be liked, loved and accepted. We need relationships….but be careful! The challenge here is to resist unhealthy relationships and anything negative that will block the flow of God’s spirit in your life.  Don’t give your heart away to just anyone. The wrong relationship can cause your heart to be IMPrisoned by emotional stresses, leaving no room for God to fulfill His perfect work in you.

“Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own” I Corinthians 6:19 (NIV)

Jesus wants it all! Not just a fraction of the heart, but He wants 100%! It doesn’t matter how many times your heart has been IMPounded, rejected, hurt or broken; He has the power to heal, restore and put the broken pieces back together. Don’t ever underestimate the risks associated with your health-IMPairing habits and self-destructive behaviors. These are silent killers of the heart. Guard your heart physically as well as spiritually, for it is the wellspring of life!

Ways to guard your heart: Read God’s word daily. Resist temptations. Ask God to protect your heart from IMPurities. Speak good words. Let God be the source of your joy. Hide His word in your heart. Be transformed by the renewing of your mind (Romans 12:2); whatsoever things are true and lovely, think on these things (Philippians 4:8).

We may not have it together all the time. Sure, we all mess up and make mistakes. I know I do! We are IMPerfect people, but God still loves us, and he wants the best for those who follow him! He’s the only one that can change the IMPossible to I’m Possible!

Give your heart completely to Him. Guard it for His glory!
