“Let us examine our ways and test them, and let us return to the Lord” Lamentations 3:40 (NIV)

Self-reflection – examination of our conscious thoughts, feelings, motives; coming to grips with our mental and emotional capabilities; reflections of the heart and soul and understanding who we are.

So, who are you? Do you like yourself? Are you really satisfied with your life?

We are the ultimate creators of our own self-concept. The outcome of life’s challenges and circumstances influences what and how we feel about ourselves.  Through self-examination and reflections, we can learn a lot about ourselves and who we are in Christ.

We look in the mirror, spin around, suck and tuck it in, visualizing a slim, trim, buff, six-pack abs or svelte body. When we finish spinning around and holding our breath in, everything that was sucked and tucked in, spreads its way back out. Mirrors don’t lie. Unfortunately, at times we lie to ourselves and distort the truth about ourselves.

“Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves. 2 Corinthians 13:5 (NIV)

Think about this. If you have a positive self-concept about yourself, you are much happier, have better relationships, and you are more productive. We can improve our self-concept if we are willing to take responsibility for our actions and change to improve. It’s time to take charge and change for the better.  A constant negative, unrealistic view of yourself or thinking you are “less than”, can cause unhealthy stresses and it also sets the tone for failure.

Mirrors provide an image or perception of who we are on the outside. It is our Creator who looks at the inside, our heart, motives and spirit. We all have weakness. We should accept those personal shortcomings that we are powerless to change and work on things that are changeable without becoming obsessed about it. Each day we can do something for ourselves that will help us feel better about ourselves. All it takes is to do one thing that can change the whole outlook of how you feel about yourself.

Life is a ballgame. Stop hiding in the dugout of despair. Step up to the bat of life and swing. We all struggle with strikeouts by making bad choices. Just keep swinging until you make a hit. Then run with it for the big win!

Tips for self-reflection:

Believe in God and yourself!

Stop comparing yourself to other people.

Examine and embrace your strengths and work on your weaknesses.

Never shortchange your potential by procrastinating.

Don’t let mistakes determine your message.

The beauty of God’s plan is for us to acknowledge Him in all of our ways. Regardless of how crazy our life can be, we must daily examine our inner soul, return to Him and accept His priceless gift of eternal life.

Love yourself and be inspired to breathe!
